No More Trailers!
Kevin & Jahna had known each other since they were children. They even dated for a while in high school, but then went their separate ways. They re-connected 6 years ago and are now married. Their blended family includes three school-age children: Kyle, Renee, and Zoey.
For 3 years, since Katrina, this family has been living in a FEMA trailer on Jahna’s parents’ land. Kevin joked, “The FEMA trailer is so small I don’t have room to turn over.”

Jahna added, “I’ve learned patience as we’ve waited for construction to begin on our Habitat house. I really look forward to the day I can move in.”
Pre-Katrina, Kevin & Jahna were renting an apartment in Bay Saint Louis. They lost both their vehicles and all their possessions in the storm. They evacuated to Jahna’s parents’ home, but it quickly flooded, as well. All seven people wound up in the attic, along with two pet birds, waiting a day for the water to subside.
Both Kevin & Jahna work at the Silver Slipper casino, Kevin as a cook and Jahna at Keno. After Katrina, the casino was one of the first businesses to re-open in the area. Kevin and Jahna feel very fortunate that and they were able to get back to work within 5 months of the hurricane.
During the week-long construction, Kevin and Jahna were given time off from their jobs at the casino to work alongside the volunteers that came to build their house.
On the day of the dedication, the Silver Slipper provided lunch for the attendees. Several staff members from the casino attended, including the general manager, who thanked Habitat, the volunteers, and others for helping his employees obtain decent, affordable housing.
Kyle, Renee and Zoey are “very excited about having their own bedrooms and a real living room!” They look forward to the day when they won’t have to live in the camper anymore and “we’ll have neighbor friends to play with!” With most of the work complete, that day is coming soon! |
